Fezile Dabi District Municipality recently hosted an exciting Geographic Information System (GIS) Career Day for Grade 12 Geography learners from Nkgopoleng Sec School, providing them with valuable exposure to the dynamic world of GIS.
To enrich their academic journey, Fezile Dabi District Municipality partnered with key industry leaders – including ESRI South Africa and University of the Free State – to help learners make informed decisions about their future, and discover where a passion for geography can take them.
Officially opening the event, Mr Tshitereke Masheleni – Planning Manager at Fezile Dabi District Municipality, highlighted that career guidance is one of the most important investments in empowering young people. He encouraged learners to actively engage with exhibiting organisations and gather information on diverse career paths. “We are bringing to you different branches and applications of geography to empower you as you pursue different paths that you can go into. Whether you aspire to become a Town or Regional Planner, a GIS Specialist, you will be fully empowered by this career day.
The event introduced learners to real-world applications of their classroom subject. Through interactive presentations, learners engaged directly with industry experts and gained first-hand insights into key disciplines. Real-life geographers showcased how spatial data powers everyday decisions – from town planning and emergency response to tracking environmental changes.
